Gas Industry Technical Report Template

Purpose. Technicians and supervisors use this template to compile a technical report on an asset condition, a defect, a test result or an investigation so that decisions can be made and records kept.
1.When to use this template
Use this template when a manager requests a written technical report, when a cathodic protection or regulator survey shows a trend that needs a decision, and for the annual reports required by the safety case. Reports must be factual and must separate observations from conclusions.
2.Structure
Begin with the purpose and scope, then describe the method and equipment used, then present the results with readings in tables, then state the conclusions and recommendations. Attach drawings, photographs and raw data.
3.Presenting data
Present readings with their units, dates and instrument identifiers. Compare results to the network standard criteria and to the previous survey so that the reader can see the trend.
4.Recommendations
Recommendations must be specific, must name a responsible role and must include a target date. Where a recommendation needs budget, state the estimated cost band.
5.Review and approval
The author's manager must review the report before it is issued. Reports used for safety case decisions must be filed in the controlled document library.
