CAQA Gasline Networks, gas distribution and network operations
CAQA Gasline Networks owns and operates a regulated natural gas distribution network that delivers gas to more than 240,000 residential, commercial and industrial customers across south-eastern and north-eastern Victoria. The business builds and maintains polyethylene and steel mains, connects services to customer meters, operates district regulator stations and city gates, and responds to gas escapes and infrastructure emergencies around the clock. It also runs a small industrial gas cylinder filling and bulk transfer operation at the Traralgon depot, and is trialling the blending of green hydrogen into a section of its Wodonga network.
The business is organised around a 24 hour control centre in Dandenong South and three regional depots at North Geelong, Traralgon and Wodonga. The control centre monitors network pressure and flow through the SCADA system and dispatches field crews. Each depot houses construction crews, network maintenance technicians, metering staff and a first response roster. Field crews work a standard day shift with a rotating on-call emergency roster, and the control centre works three shifts across the week so that a qualified operator is always on desk.
Safety before supply
No job is so urgent that it cannot be done safely. If a task cannot be done to the procedure, the task stops.
Reliability
Customers expect gas at the burner tip every day. Planned work, good records and well maintained assets keep supply steady.
Competence
People only work within the scope of their current authorisation, and the business invests in training and reassessment.
Openness
Incidents, defects and mistakes are reported early and shared so that the whole network learns from them.
Services and operations
To deliver natural gas safely and reliably to every customer on the network while protecting the public, our people and the environment.
Network operations and control
Continuous monitoring and control of network pressure, flow and odourisation from the Dandenong South control centre, with SCADA alarms managed and field crews dispatched to every event.
Mains and services construction
Construction, laying and connection of polyethylene and steel distribution mains and customer services, including excavation, butt fusion, pressure testing and commissioning to the network standard.
Network maintenance and integrity
Planned maintenance of district regulators, city gates, valves, water bath heaters and cathodic protection systems, plus the cyclic leak survey program across the whole network.
Emergency response
A 24 hour first response service for reported gas escapes, third party damage and facility events, with site control, make safe, isolation and emergency repair under the permit system.
Metering and data services
Meter reading, meter exchange, data logger installation and fault finding for residential, commercial and industrial customers, feeding accurate consumption data to retailers.
Industrial gas and hydrogen operations
Cylinder filling by weight, bulk gas transfer and storage at the Traralgon depot, and the operation of an electrolyser and hydrogen injection skid on the Wodonga blending trial.
